Interesting article by my OIM colleague. Jerome distinguishes between the roles of Innovation, Research and Development. Most of the businesses I have been a part of have had some component of I, R & D and my experience aligns with his view. I particularly like the view that innovation is a mindset which creates opportunities that could benefit from R and/ or D but any R&D has to answer specific questions and must create value. Worth a read.

Yvonne posts some interesting thoughts about self development in this month's Osborne newsletter. I have often used the rule-of-thumb for me and my teams of attempting to do the day-job in four days per week, leaving the fifth day of the work week for activities that move the game on, either for the business, for the team or for the individual. This "fifth day time" can be used to work on strategy, to get a better understanding of a new market, to take some courses, or maybe to get out and meet and greet team members you haven't seen for a while. Taking this approach has other benefits - to free up one day every week takes real effort: you must stop doing stuff that is unimportant, cancel unnecessary meetings and get good at effective delegation. As a leader, I have always felt guilty when I have needed to ask team members who are already working long hours to do something extra. Helping them adopt the "four-days-per-week-for-the-day-job" mentality removes that guilt and replaces it with a feeling that we have a powerful resource to drive progress.

Great to see some of the changes in the charity sector that my colleague, Derek Fraser, talks about in this month's newsletter. Particularly liked the AFP job board policy of requiring salries to be published in recruitment adverts and the impact of truth and reconciliation in this sector. Worth a read!

Interesting thoughts from my colleague Colleen Winston on the importance of reflection. I was struck by the statistic that reflection increases performance by 23% (although how that is measured is a mystery). Also made me think that the Duke of York might have benefitted from some reflection in his past activities and associations!
