Baldur's Gate 3: Should You Save or Kill Mizora in Act 2? (2024)

Summary

  • Killing Mizora in Baldur's Gate 3 results in one character's death and locks the player out of the possibility of romancing another.
  • Saving Mizora allows Wyll to continue being part of the player's group and unlocks the possibility of obtaining the powerful Infernal Rapier.
  • Saving Mizora also allows for the potential of unlocking a romance scene with her during Act 3, but it may have consequences depending on the player's further choices.

The decision of killing or saving Mizora in Baldur’s Gate 3 can be a confounding one, as the outcomes of each possible choice are not always clear. Mizora is an evil-aligned character who is revealed during Act 1 and serves as a constant presence in Wyll’s questline. As such, choosing how to deal with her can be complicated, as choices surrounding her may not always seem rational. This is true with many instances in the game, such as standing by Shadowheart in Baldur’s Gate 3 and helping her reach her faith-related goal of becoming a Dark Justiciar.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Act 2 and Wyll’s questline in Baldur’s Gate 3.

In Baldur's Gate 3, the devil character known as Mizora strikes a contract with Wyll to turn him into her servant and send him on jobs she sees as pertinent to herself in exchange for additional power. Mizora is, unquestionably, an evil character, so getting rid of her may seem like a good idea. This is especially true for anyone roleplaying a good-aligned character, but it can also apply to any player with conflicting goals. However, the results may not play out as expected. The same can be said about the opposite decision. Not everything is as it seems in Baldur’s Gate 3, and this is most definitely the truth with the choice of saving or killing Mizora.

The Cambion Serves The Archdevil Zariel

Baldur's Gate 3: Should You Save or Kill Mizora in Act 2? (2)

Before knowing whether or not to save Mizora, it is best to understand who she truly is. Mizora is a powerful cambion who works in the service of the archdevil known as Zariel – who was also Karlach’s master before she ran away from her duties as a soldier of Avernus. While she has some intersection with Karlach’s backstory, Mizora’s true role is in Wyll’s storyline. The cambion appeared upon him in a dire moment of need, when he was trying to impede cultists from summoning the dreadful dragon Tiamat onto his plane of existence in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Seeing himself powerless to stop all of them, Wyll ceded to a pact proposed by Mizora, in which he would grant him the necessary powers to beat them, but, in exchange, he would have to offer her his eternal servitude. One of the aspects of Mizora’s pact impeded Wyll from discussing the events that took place, from both his newly-found pact to the defeat of the Tiamat cultists – something that stirred problems with his father, who demanded explanations. This is the main reason Wyll was cast away from Baldur’s Gate and has since distanced himself from Ulder Ravengard.

One of the tasks given to Wyll by Mizora was to hunt down Karlach, who had deserted from Zariel’s infernal army. This is where the player can have an active approach to the outcome of Wyll and Mizora’s story arc. If they choose to kill Karlach, Wyll will be rewarded by Mizora with a special item called Infernal Robe. If they choose to spare Karlach, however, Mizora will punish Wyll by transforming him into a devil, spawning horns from his head in Baldur’s Gate 3.

What Happens To Mizora In Baldur’s Gate 3’s Act 2

On the main bridge leading up to Moonrise Towers in Act 2, a projection of Mizora will appear, asking the player to free an important asset to Zariel that is imprisoned inside. She says that this is a direct order for Wyll and that he will be sent Avernus if he does not comply with her request. After getting through the Moonrise Towers in Baldur’s Gate 3 and the first part of the Ketheric Thorm boss fight, players will be able to explore the Mind Flayer Colony, where they may encounter Mizora stuck in a Mind Flayer pod. There, they can use the buttons to either unleash or annihilate Mizora.

When choosing the option to exterminate Mizora while interacting with the buttons on her Mind Flayer pod during Act 2, the device will effectively kill her in an instant. The consequence of this is that, as soon as she dies, Wyll will also be killed and sent to Avernus to burn. This is because actively killing her is a breach of Wyll’s contract. When Mizora dies in Baldur’s Gate 3, Wyll also dies, permanently removing him from the player’s group. If he is currently in the party, players will witness a short cutscene in which he burns down to nothing but a pile of ashes.

Wyll’s ashes can be looted for all the gear and items he had in his inventory, so nothing other than himself is lost. Wyll’s death, however, makes it impossible to complete his companion story missions and also interferes with the progress of Karlach’s quests. In addition to the permanent loss of Wyll as a companion, Mizora is not actually killed. As may have been learned after killing Yurgir in Baldur’s Gate 3, when a devil is killed outside of Avernus, they are simply teleported back to their last place in Avernus. This means that killing Mizora simply unleashes her back into the Hells, kills Wyll, and infuriates her.

Mizora will make a reappearance during Act 3, and how she behaves will depend on whether she was saved or not. If she was killed, she will be furious and will personally see that the player encounters additional difficulty when trying to rescue Duke Ravengard from the clutches of the Absolute cult. Choosing to kill her also locks the player out of the possibility of romancing Mizora in Baldur’s Gate 3. The romance scene with the devil is a simple one, but cannot be reached if she is exterminated while imprisoned inside the Mind Flayer pod.

Even if players do not actively hit the exterminate button on Mizora’s pod and instead choose to ignore her altogether, this will be considered killing her. They will get a warning before heading into the main encounter room where they will face Ketheric Thorm in Baldur's Gate 3. This serves as a point of no return in the game. Once they enter, Mizora will die inside the Mind Flayer pod, taking Wyll to become a Lemure in Avernus. If Wyll is the player’s main character, he will die, and they will reach Game Over, so this can quickly turn into one of the most important decisions in BG3.

This is a prime example of why save scumming can be beneficial, although this isn't an option in Honour Mode.

What Happens If You Save Mizora In Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur's Gate 3: Should You Save or Kill Mizora in Act 2? (4)

If players choose to save Mizora, then things will develop in a drastically different manner. The most notable part is that Wyll will not be killed off and removed from the party permanently, but will continue to be part of the group moving forward - thus allowing players to conclude his story missions and unlock Karlach and Wyll’s ending in Baldur’s Gate 3. Mizora will hold up to her end of the bargain, which was releasing Wyll. Nevertheless, she shows a clause in the contract that says he will only be released from her grasp within six months, and not immediately.

After Mizora is saved from the Mind Flayer pod, players can try to coerce a reward from her by using a Charisma check. If they pass, she will then grant the party’s leader a weapon called the Infernal Rapier. This rare sword is very powerful and even allows players to summon a Cambion in battle. Saving Mizora is the only known way of obtaining Infernal Rapier in Baldur’s Gate 3 so far. In addition to this, releasing Mizora from the pod will also make her useful while trying to locate Duke Ravengard in Act 3, as opposed to trying to kill him herself when the contract with her is broken.

The last possible benefit that players may get from saving Mizora is the possibility of unlocking the romance scene with the devil during Act 3. If she is saved and a certain thread of dialogue options is followed, players will be able to sleep with Mizora – this action can have severe consequences depending on whom the player is romancing, and not all companions will approve of this. Nevertheless, romancing Mizora is optional, so players can save her and not spend a night of hellish pleasures with her. Unless players go through an evil playthrough in Baldur’s Gate 3, there is no real reason not to save Mizora.
